Visiting Mongolia
48-hour registration rule
Any foreign national entering Mongolia must register with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival (Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens).
Who needs to register?
All foreign nationals staying in Mongolia for more than 30 days. (Short-stay tourists under 30 days are usually covered by their hotel's registration, but the obligation remains with the individual.)
Where to register
- Online: ic.gov.mn (Immigration Agency) and burtgel.gov.mn
- In person: Ulaanbaatar, Chingeltei district, Immigration Agency building
- In provinces: Local Immigration Agency branch
Required documents
- Original passport and a copy
- Page showing visa or visa-free entry stamp
- Proof of Mongolian address (hotel confirmation, rental agreement, etc.)
- Inviting person or organization info (if applicable)
Penalties
- •Found unregistered — administrative fine (₮100,000–500,000 per current statute).
- •Overstay — daily fine plus restrictions on future entry.
- •Serious violations — deportation and re-entry ban.
